Hip-Hop Fashion 101: Velour Tracksuits

P. Diddy & Mase showing off their stylish Sean John velour tracksuits

First, what is velour? It is a plush fabric which is usually made from cotton (or synthetics like polyester), but the key word here is, plush. It combines the stretchiness of knitted wear with the exclusive look of velvet. You have seen it as the red theater drapes, stage curtains, robes, and of course tracksuits which are the topic of this article.

Tracksuits have always been a part of hip-hop culture due to the ease of movement and style they provided the early b-boys. The b-boys could differentiate their crews by wearing different colors and writing their names on them.

These photos illustrate the continued en vogue'ness of velour tracksuits, from Nas to Drake

The tracksuits themselves could be made of various materials but nothing signified wealth like the velour tracksuits of the late 1990s and early 2000s. That is why we consider the velour tracksuit to be a part of our hip-hop fashion 101 series. Because they harken back to the golden age of hip-hop when b-boys did their thing all the way to P. Diddy and Mase rocking their velour tracksuits.

Really once they hit they never really went away and velour tracksuits were popular throughout the 2000s and into the 2010s. Many celebs (Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian) and rappers alike (Eminem, DMX, Fabolous) have been spotted wearing their velour tracksuits. There are many reasons for their popularity such as a wide range of color options, luxury appearance, warmth, and versatility.

The Cheetah Girls from the Disney TV show wore colorful velour tracksuits

They are so versatile that you could literally wear them around the house, then to the gym, go on a jog through the park, go to the store, and walk down the red carpet at a big award show at night. They wouldn't look out of place in any of these vastly different settings. That's why they will never go out of style.
